THINGS I CAN’T FIND ANSWERS TO

Does Pidge have a crush on Lance ????

[s7e1: A Little Adventure, 07:59]

uhhhhhhh….. did Pidge just call Lance cute???

When I was rewatching this episode, I was quite taken aback by Pidge’s comment here. It just doesn’t seem like something Pidge would say, and I started wondering why it was necessary for her to mention Lance like this, calling him cute in a backhanded way… but calling him cute nonetheless…

Then I rewatched Season 8, episode 1: Launch Date and saw Pidge’s reaction to Allura’s date with Lance:

[Season 8, Episode 1: Launch Date, 06:41]

Why does she react this way??? Why does she look almost… sad or worried?? could she have feelings for Lance ?????

I was legit losing my mind and hoping I was wrong, because of my great fondness for the headcanon that she’s aromantic asexual… So I rewatched the whole series and looked out for any more evidence.

Well, I rewatched season 1 and 2 and I can happily report that there are no signs in any of those seasons that she has any sort of feelings for Lance, or reacts any way to him flirting with girls. In fact the most telling episode is season 1 Episode 6: taking flight, where Lance flirts a lot with Nyma but Pidge doesn’t react at all, too occupied by Beezer.

And in season 3, I only found this:

[Season 3, Episode 1: Changing of the Guard, 09:40]

In season 4, Episode 3: Black Site she seems bashful when Lance compliments her on the cloaking device she made for Voltron.

[Season 4, Episode 3: Black Site, 19:07]

But there’s no blushing, so I’d chalk this up to her being modest rather than because she has a crush on Lance.

Then there’s nothing again. Even when Lance talks about Allura in season 6:

[Season 6, Episode 2: Razor’s Edge, 19:07]

Pidge looks smug, not jealous.

And there’s nothing else until we get to that part in season 7, when she calls Lance cute. So I have no idea what’s going on here.

Pidge, Lance and Allura

[Season 2, Episode 7: Space Mall, 22:30]

The first time Lance says he’ll shop for something sparkly with her, Pidge and Lance buy a video game and a video game console instead of bringing back anything for Allura. Allura doesn't mention it, which means she didn’t actually expect him to bring something back, and to be fair, Lance never said he would, he used it more as an excuse to do an activity together. But once it’s clear she’s not coming, I don’t think Lance really thinks about it.

The video game and the video game console however, is brought up again in Season 8, Episode 1: Launch Date, where Pidge gives up her video game that she traded an autograph for and that she really wanted, in order to get Allura clothes for her date with Lance.

[Season 8, Episode 1: Launch Date, 13:39]

Furthermore, Pidge’s robot friend, Beezer, is also seen at Allura and Lance’s date, suggesting that Pidge is somewhere nearby, which is a callback to season 1, when Pidge always walked around with a turned Galra robot, Rover. They were together so much that Lance becomes suspicious in Season 1, Episode 4: The Fall of the Castle of Lions, when he sees fake Rover.

[Season 1, Episode 4: The Fall of the Castle of Lions, 10:54]

But curiously, here,

[Season 8, Episode 1: Launch Date, 20:43]

Lance doesn’t ask where Pidge is, nor does Allura, who saw Beezer with Pidge earlier that day when she asked her for help.

Then, we have Season 8, episode 8: Clear Day, where Lance says he’ll bring something sparkly back, a callback to season 2. But he ends up getting a blue lion plushy instead, and Pidge is the one who actually ends up finding something sparkly:

[Season 8, Episode 8: Clear Day, 19:59]

A helmet covered in rhinestones. I think Lance realizes here that the plushy he got isn’t the something sparkly Allura asked for. This is interesting, but I can’t figure out what it means, since this never paid off. I suspect the pay off was cut and/or changed.

Expressions of Characters

Season 1, Episode 1: The Rise of Voltron

Huh. Lance’s expression here is the only one that doesn’t change…

What could this mean? Why is Lance the only one who still looks worried? hmmm…

Then we have this in season 2, episode 6: The Ark of Taujeer:

[Season 2, episode 6: the ark of taujeer, 22:42]

Allura’s expression here sours considerably, and she looks at Keith very suspiciously. Could she be suspecting Keith of being Galra here, because of their conversation in the pod? I wouldn’t put it past her, since she is very perceptive.

Season 3 Episode 5: The Journey

Keith has just found Shiro’s signal, but he doesn’t look happy, but rather… suspicious… Why..??

James’ Resemblance to Lance

In my very first analysis I pointed out how Keith’s dynamic with James is weirdly similar to his dynamic with Lance. At the time I thought that this was the creators' attempt at a do-over, because I thought they didn’t like Lance, but that’s not true as it turns out, since both LM AND JDS have spoken out to say that Lance is their favorite character. And if I’m going to do this in good faith, I need to not assume anything in bad faith. All I can do is observe and draw conclusions based on what I see. And what I see is a character who is very like Lance in many ways:

Both want to be (fighter) pilots:

both are jealous of Keith’s skills

both get crushes on girls…

both look up a lot to Shiro

both have short brown hair and similar appearance,

both had conflicts with Keith (though Keith never got violent with Lance… and Lance never insulted Keith’s parents)

and like Lance, the rest of his MFE crew is introduced through him

James is introduced first, then everyone else is introduced after him, named by Iverson, as members of his crew:

This similarity is very odd. vldunchartedregions pointed out that the MFEs presence is much heavier in season 7 than originally intended, because they wanted to have a spin-off show with them. This seems to be true, since Kimberly Brooks, Allura’s voice actor, said that she was excited about Allura appearing in a future, post-canon spin-off show [31, 01:12] (which… yikes). But why did they make him so similar to Lance? Is this how Lance would have been introduced through Keith if Keith was the main character? Were they trying the same trick twice? I don’t know… Maybe he was meant to be the main character of the spin-off show that we never got, and the creators just loved Lance so much that they made another one of him, lol. I don’t know, this is all conjecture.
